Is our brain becoming more sophisticated or deteriorating in the digital world?
Following every lecture I give, sometime after I give examples of the rotting brain, someone in the audience askes; isn’t technology enhancing our development rather than inhibiting it? Every technology, in every form is changing our brain in some way. For example: when man discovered fire, he used this technology to heat food, especially meat which allowed him to consume protein more efficiently, which helped to develop the brain (cortex). As for smartphones and the internet, the brain changed as well. As of today, we are familiar only with the areas that were damaged or decreased. I won’t say that there are areas that are not being developed, there probably are – we haven’t determined this as of date.
For more information and a deeper explanation about the areas of the brain that are being affected, I would highly recommend that you read about the terms: Lazy cognitive thinking, memory in the digital world, and the effort of communication.
